Human Empowerment as a Key Component of Human-AI Robot Teaming
DescriptionThere is growing interest in developing human-centered design approaches for human-AI teaming systems. The present case study was initiated to provide evaluation tools that could support a human-centered design assessment for a virtual testbed. In the present study, we worked from the lens of industrial/organizational psychology and human factors and set out to identify a set of easily measurable constructs that consider behaviors, subjective experiences, and worker well-being outcomes. Current evidence suggests that worker empowerment may be critical in human-AI-robotic teaming systems to facilitate efficient and productive outcomes and ensure worker well-being. The present case study aims to examine the potential importance of empowerment for facilitating performance in human-AI teaming systems. A secondary aim is to develop a holistic assessment for user empowerment to use in the development of a virtual testbed.
