Presentation
User-Centered Design in the Face of Limited User Access
SessionPD5: User-Focused Design
DescriptionTime with users is a precious commodity that has become increasingly difficult to come by. Traditional user studies face other challenges in some industries where users are rarely involved in requisitioning new products. These barriers jeopardize good design practices, where limited user access seeds temptation to bypass user engagement altogether.
The primary goal of the work presented here is to share techniques and lessons learned for successful user engagement as work paradigms continue to shift. User engagement goes far beyond just user studies, and valuable insights can be found even in the most casual of user interactions. The methods, lessons, and limitations presented here reflect work performed across multiple projects over the past several years, where we have utilized combinations of these techniques for conducting user-centered design in the absence of regular direct user engagement.
