NAUTICAL: Accelerating Instructional System Design With Generative AI
SessionDemonstration Session 2
Description“A trained Navy is a ready Navy.” However, modernization efforts and the complexity of novel systems requires a shift in training development: The pace of Instructional System Design (ISD) processes is vastly slower than that at which capabilities need to transition. To enable “Speed to the Fleet,” accelerating the completion of ISD analysis products is critical. Novel techniques in generative artificial intelligence (genAI) hint at an order-of-magnitude acceleration.
As part of the Navy’s Ready Relevant Learning Challenge to test this assumption through competition, our team (data scientists, designers, human factors and software engineers) built a Novel AI Utility for Training, Instruction, and Comprehensive Analytic Learning (NAUTICAL). Leveraging best practices in human-centered/agile design and engineering, our prototype was operationalized in six weeks, demonstrating a reduction in time-to-completion from years/month to weeks/days. We seek to demonstrate how our community can instantiate genAI in a human-centered way to address imminent national security challenges.
