Human Performance Implications of Remote Operations in High-Risk Industries
DescriptionHigh-risk industries often look for methods to reduce costs and increase safety by reducing the number of people required to conduct daily operations. This can involve remote operations and automation. However, remote operations and automation often presents additional and sometimes unique HF/E challenges. The focus of this panel is to explore remote operations in multiple industries to explore the following questions: What is working and what is not? What findings or methods can be applied universally, and what seems to be domain or context specific? Are there any first principles for identifying and evaluating the safety of remote operations? What are the different concepts of operations for different domains (e.g., one person controlling one operation or one to a few). Panelists will be subject matter experts in their domain and have direct knowledge of the benefits and drawbacks of remote operations, with particular emphasis on lessons for HF/E.
