Update on Ergonomics Standards in the United States
DescriptionErgonomics standards are in place or in development in several States. In addition, laws governing productivity quotas in warehousing establishments have been passed in 4 states. The Washington State Legislature passed two laws in 2023 that impact ergonomics. The first was related to the use of productivity quotas in warehouses. The second authorized one industry-specific ergonomics rule per year starting in 2026. Minnesota’s Safe Patient Handling statute has been in effect since 2009. This statute covers nursing homes, hospitals, and outpatient surgical centers. In 2023, the Minnesota Legislature passed two additional statutes that involve ergonomics. The first is related to the use of productivity quotas in warehouses. The second covers warehouse distribution centers, meatpacking sites and certain health care facilities.
The panel will provide an overview of ergonomics standards, updates on implementation, and the rescinded 2000 OSHA . There will be an opportunity for discussion with panel and audience.
