An Update on the Human Factors and Ergonomics Standards Work
DescriptionThe Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) oversees various ergonomics and human factors standards activities, including standards developed within HFES and standards outside of HFES, such as International Organization for Standardization (ISO), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). The current panelists are responsible and actively participate in various subcommittees (SCs) and working groups (WGs) of Human Factors (HF)/Ergonomics (E)-related standards both nationally and internationally. The first panelist will cover the HFES efforts in the ISO Technical Committee (TC) 159 (Ergonomics) Subcommittee 1, which standardizes general ergonomics principles for designing and evaluating products, systems, services, and environments. Subcommittee 3 focuses on standards related to anthropometry and biomechanics. The second panelist will address the ongoing revision and name change of ISO 11228-3 Part 3: Repetitive movements and exertions of the upper limbs. The revision committee has developed criteria for including and classifying methods such as risk assessment, job design/redesign, exposure, and surveillance tools, which will be presented and discussed. Subcommittee 5 covers standardization in Ergonomics of the Physical Environment. The third panelist will discuss the progress of a working draft, which encompasses individuals with color deficiency, low vision, and age-related changes in color vision. The ISO 24505 series uses the Munsell Color System for consistent color descriptions, and examples will be shared to illustrate improvements in communication for color-deficient individuals. The F48 Committee of ASTM comprises a consensus standards committee for exoskeletons and exosuits. The fourth presentation will highlight how the development of exoskeleton technology standards can serve as a model for improving human-centered design for other products, such as personal protective equipment and wearable technologies. In the HF/E domain, the International Ergonomics Association (IEA) collaborates closely with ISO TC159 as a category-A liaison. To fulfill this role, the IEA has established the Advisory Group on Standardization (AGS) within the IEA Executive Committee. The final presentation will enlighten the AGS's mission of promoting international standardization activities within the IEA and contribute to the global spread and development of ergonomics and human factors
