The Accessible Control Room: Opportunities for Advanced Reactors
SessionS3: Nuclear
DescriptionAs control rooms at existing nuclear facilities upgrade and as new advanced reactors are designed and built, there is an opportunity and need to consider a more diverse group of users. This presentation will suggest areas where existing human factors guidance for nuclear control rooms can be enhanced by consideration of accessibility. Especially for advanced reactors, accessibility shortcomings of legacy control rooms can be readily overcome to facilitate inclusive operations.
A new generation of plants is not beholden to legacy analog control rooms, and all new plants feature digital control rooms. These digital control rooms bring with them the possibilities for advanced visualization and monitoring, automated controls, smaller staff requirements, and more flexibility for the plant. However, one of the most important transformations is the opportunity to fully incorporate accessibility into the design of control rooms.
