Development of an Analysis of Alternatives Tool for Human-Agent Teaming Research
DescriptionHuman-agent teams (HATs), in which people and technological agents interact to accomplish feats surpassing what either can achieve alone, are on the horizon. While the HAT literature is extensive, the myriad of studied constructs, experimental approaches, and measures used creates difficulties for practitioners wanting to study HAT.
Analysis of alternatives (AoA) decision support tools have been employed in multiple sectors to address similar concerns, but have yet to be harnessed for addressing disciplinary silos within the HAT research community. To address this gap, we developed a tool for the Contextual Labeling of Analytical Information into Relevant Valuable Options to Yield Alternatives for Novel Techniques (CLAIRVOYANT). CLAIRVOYANT is an open-source analysis of alternatives tool that supports both researchers and practitioners in designing HAT experiments and agent development. In this paper, we describe our development and validation efforts, highlighting lessons learned and areas for future iterations of CLAIRVOYANT.
