Which Source Matters More? The Influence of Sharer versus Publisher on Trust in News on Social Media
DescriptionDespite rising consumption of digital news, trust in news is declining globally. Though past work suggests skepticism of news users' encounters on social media and complex relationships between trust in the news, limited research explores how people validate news information on social media. Fostering trust in credible digital news requires understanding user needs and behaviors in real-world contexts where news is encountered.

In this paper, we seek to understand how online news contexts may impact trust in news, specifically, how people make sense of information about the social media sharer and the news publisher when consuming news on social media. This work pursues the following research question: Do people trust the sharer or publisher of news on social media more, and what are the underlying reasons contributing to these opinions? These findings can be applied to design tools that facilitate users’ trust decisions about news they encounter on social media.
