Towards Safety Through Dismantling Systemic Racism Within the Healthcare Profession: Examining Systemic Factors and Initiatives Focused on BIPOC HCWs and Patients in Ontario, Canada
DescriptionRacism and inequity in the healthcare system contributes to disparities in outcomes for both IBPOC (Indigenous, Black, and People of Color) patients and healthcare workers (HCWs). As a result of racism, disengagement, treatment non-adherence, and mistrust are high among IBPOC communities and burnout, turnover, and are higher among IBPOC HCWs. This highlights the necessity of anti-racist policies to improve care and outcomes for IBPOC patients and HCWs within healthcare organizations. To understand current efforts to improve equity in healthcare, this study examines governance, policies, and practices implemented to eliminate racism within these systems. Semi-structured interviews and surveys will be conducted with healthcare workers and administrative staff about current anti-racism initiatives at their institution, as well as to gain an understanding of barriers to implementing anti-racism strategies. Thematic analysis will be used to understand existing anti-racism policies and the findings will inform resources for anti-racism efforts in Ontario hospitals.
