Designing, Implementing, and Testing Decision Support for a Digital Therapeutic System to Improve Medication Adherence for Older Adults
SessionA2: Conscious Aging in Place
DescriptionMEDSReM© (Medication Education, Decision Support, Reminding and Monitoring) is a digital therapeutic system to improve hypertension medication adherence for older adults. The decision support functionality guides users in making decisions about missed medication doses; namely, safely taking it when remembered or skipping the missed dose and waiting to take the next scheduled dose. There is a need to develop the decision support functionality to guide the safe use of missed medications that can be implemented through an easy-to-use digital therapeutic system for older adults with hypertension. Once developed, the decision support should be delivered in a usable format for the target population. Thus, testing the feature with older users to evaluate their understanding of and actions based on the guidance is crucial. We describe the design and implementation of the MEDSReM© decision support feature including the algorithm containing safe time windows for hypertension medications and usability testing for optimal use
