CANCELED - Evaluating Safety Concerns for Pediatric Mental and Behavioral Health Patients and Providers in the Emergency Department: A Systems Perspective
DescriptionThe proportion of pediatric Emergency Department (ED) visits for mental and behavioral health (MBH) reasons has doubled from 2011 to 2020. Pediatric patients with MBH conditions visit the ED for an array of issues ranging from suicidal ideation to self-harm, and eating and substance use disorders to behavioral outbursts, aggression, adjustment disorder, and psychosis. Patient safety concerns for MBH patients have been described in different ways in the literature; while some studies have addressed it as a collection of adverse events, such as suicide, elopement, medication errors, or harms resulting from seclusion and restraint use, others have adopted a wider definition that includes issues such as quality of care and adequacy of available services. This study uses the Systems Engineering Initiative (SEIPS 3.0) framework to understand facilitators and barriers to patient and provider safety in the context of pediatric MBH caregiving in the ED, and areas for improvement.
