CANCELED - The Missing Engineering Discipline in Cybersecurity: Human Factors Engineering
DescriptionThis research lecture emphasizes the critical role of Human Factors Engineering (HFE) in improving cybersecurity by addressing human vulnerabilities. The main research question explores the benefits of HFE in mitigating human errors and reducing cybersecurity breaches. Despite the high involvement of human factors in security breaches, as highlighted by the Verizon Data Breach Investigative Report (2023) and corroborated by research from Stanford University and Tessian, HFE remains underutilized and underrecognized in cybersecurity. Current cybersecurity frameworks heavily depend on technical disciplines such as software and network engineering, yet often overlook the integration of HFE. This omission presents significant risks, making organizations more vulnerable to cyberattacks facilitated by human errors—like distractions, fatigue, and social engineering. The lecture advocates for acknowledging and integrating HFE as a distinct and essential discipline within cybersecurity, drawing on successful applications of human-centered approaches in other sociotechnical domains to enhance organizational resilience against cyber threats.
