Enhancing Engagement and Interaction in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC): A Comparative Study on the Impact of Front-Facing Partner Display in SGD mediated Conversations
DescriptionThis study investigated how an augmentative communication device with the addition of a front-facing partner display affected interactions between device users and their speaking partners. It was hypothesized that when a front-facing partner display was added to the communication device it would improve the conversational engagement between the device user and their partner. It was discovered that including a partner display consistently increased co-construction and reduced talk-over between dyads. However, from the questionnaires and post-study interviews, we found that the dyads had mixed opinions on the usability of the display, highlighting individual differences in conversational dynamics between partners and preferences for technology support.
