Using Patient Journey Mapping to Design More Equitable Maternal Care
DescriptionPregnancy and postpartum represent a period of prolonged interactions with the healthcare system. Prior research has found that maternal care is fragmented and unresponsive to individual needs, particularly for birthing people (BP) of color. To examine BP’s experiences at different points during healthcare encounters, we used patient journey mapping approaches. Surveys and interviews were conducted to understand BP’s experiences with care access, continuity of care, and education during the prenatal, intrapartum and postpartum periods. Preliminary analysis has found positive and negative experiences regarding interactions with healthcare providers and a lack of preparation for medical interventions, respectively. The results can be combined with additional systems analysis to understand challenges impacting BP’s care experiences to improve equity and patient experiences in maternal care.
