18. Emotional Ability and Its Connection with Academic Performance: An Exploratory Study on HBCU Students Post-COVID
DescriptionEmpathy, the ability to understand others’ emotions and thoughts, fosters clearer communication and reduces stress, conflict, and aggression. In educational settings, it correlates with heightened competence and strong student-instructor relationships, thereby enhancing learning quality. However, research often overlooks the impact of students’ empathy on academic success, while focusing primarily on instructors’ empathy. The pandemic has led to reduced empathy and increased anxiety and depression symptoms among college students. Recognizing and understanding academic experiences and outcomes among college students are essential for academic and psychosocial improvement. Despite the significance of empathy, its role among underrepresented college students, especially Black/African American students at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) post-pandemic, remains unclear. This study aims to bridge the knowledge gap by examining empathy levels and their association with academic achievement in these HBCU students.
