33. Fall Prevention Signage Design Strategy: An Exploration

DescriptionFall prevention efforts are multifaceted and a common challenge across healthcare. One element of the fall prevention environment is signage. When burdened with the task, well-intentioned front-line workers may product suboptimal signage that does not sufficiently consider the patient and family for whom they are intended. In this poster, the author considers the permanent (built environment) and transient (patients) aspects of the patient care system and how signage may serve as communication bridge between the two. Fall signage from one healthcare system is qualitatively evaluated. Human factors principles and gestalt theory are used to develop design guidelines for improved signage. The result is a proposed suite of fall prevention signage for the patient care environment.
