14. Young Adults' Perception of Privacy and Security Regarding Online Healthcare Platforms
DescriptionThe increased adoption of online platforms for healthcare delivery raises the need for a heightened awareness of cybersecurity as more data of sensitive nature is being shared online. Understanding users’ perceptions of privacy and security of online healthcare platforms is important as it can affect how they use the platforms. Forty-six students from Rice University completed an online survey regarding their perceptions of sharing health, personal, and financial information on physical and mental healthcare online platforms. Our results showed that regardless of the type of health platform, young adults expressed greater concern about the privacy and security of personal and financial information than health information. While careful considerations need to be taken to apply the current results to the age-appropriate population, these insights can inform the design of online health platforms by indicating what information requires more stringent and transparent privacy settings to alleviate young adults' concerns.
