2. Positive Self-Perceptions of Aging are Associated With Higher Physical Activity Scores
DescriptionThe prevalence of population aging leads to the need to understand ways of maintaining health-span and cognitive integrity into advanced age. Prior research suggests a bi-directional relationship between physical activity and positive aging mindset. Therefore, the current study sought to determine if there was a relationship between older adults’ SPA and their overall physical fitness. Toward this aim, the present study collected functional fitness assessment metrics and self-perceptions of aging (SPA) scores among residents over the age of 65 living in a retirement community. The results suggested that there was a significant association between the 6-minute walk test and SPA, as well a significant association between the 6-minute walk test and grip strength. Moreover, current investigation, as well as previous literature, suggest that designing interventions that foster positive views toward aging may increase physical activity levels and well-being later in life.
