89. Evaluating a Novel Measure to Parse the Sources of Subjective Cognitive Workload: The Task, Environment, Aid Scale

DescriptionIn Remapping, a stimuli of one modality is changed to a different modality via Extended Reality technology. The purpose is to reduce cognitive workload associated with divided attention (Wickens, 2002). To assess cognitive workload when developing cognition aids, the NASA Task Load Index (TLX) is commonly used but may be limited due to aggregation of workload derived from the task, the environment and the presence of the aid itself. To more accurately assess how cognition aids impact subjective cognitive workload, the Task, Environment, Aid (TEA) scale is being developed to parse the source of workload along the 6 workload types established by the NASA TLX by each source. A study investigating remapping in a simulated healthcare setting with n = 274 participants was conducted, showing mixed results with significant differences between environmental workload across conditions. Correlation matrices and reliability statistics provide insight for future iterations of the TEA scale.
