74. Evaluating Practices to Reduce Work Related Injuries in Healthcare Workers: A Review
DescriptionHealthcare workers play a critical role in the modern healthcare system, providing quality care to countless patients. The role of a healthcare worker is high stakes which can be both mentally and physically taxing (Lucchini et al., 2020). Research indicates that 20% of all serious workplace injuries occur in the healthcare sector (Kugler et al., 2024). Researchers aim to address this increased risk to healthcare workers by applying Human Factors & Ergonomics (HFE) principles to the field, which has lagged behind others. To assess the recent progress made in this research gap, this work aims to conduct a literature review to: (1) understand the extent to which HFE has been applied in the healthcare industry; (2) identify areas within the healthcare industry that are in need of HFE applications. This work can contribute to the understanding of the past and present research aimed at reducing workplace risks for healthcare workers.
