10. Objective Metrics to Measure Non-Technical Skills of Surgeons: A Preliminary Study
DescriptionAdverse events in the operating room (OR) often occur from a deterioration of interpersonal factors called Non-Techincal Skills (NTS) (Agha et al., 2015; Gillespie et al., 2016; Yule et al., 2005). Communication is a key construct of NTS and any breakdown of communication among the medical personnel in an OR can lead to critical consequences (Allard et al., 2020; Cha & Yu, 2022; Gawande et al., 2003). NTS are currently assessed using validated scales which are influenced by biases and time constraints. We explore the use of objective evaluation of sensor-based to evaluate NTS. Through audio recordings from a simulated surgical scenario, we evaluated surgeon’s communication subjectively using Nontechnical Skills for Surgeons (NOTSS) scale, and objectively using Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) software. Analysis indicated that while subjective scales offer blanket ratings for NTS, sensor data asses NTS at greater detail, thereby offering in-depth understanding of NTS skills.
