55. Team Error Management in Human Autonomy Teams

DescriptionHuman Autonomy Teams (HATs), where humans collaborate with autonomous agents, are becoming more common. This study investigated how HATs manage errors and the factors influencing their error management processes. Thirty teams were evenly distributed across three training scenarios: Control, Trust Calibration, and Coordination Training. During a simulated mission, an automation error was introduced, and the teams' error management processes were recorded. Teams received coordination and trust calibration training coordinated more effectively than those with control training. Most participants chose to communicate with their human teammate about the failure rather than the synthetic teammate. Early initiation of the communication about the error does not equal more effective error management. The findings highlight the critical role of communication in error management within HATs and suggest that different training methods may influence the effectiveness of team error management. Future research is needed to better understand error communication timing and channels in HATs.
