14. Challenges and Coping Strategies of Health Practitioners During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Comparison of Methods and Findings
DescriptionThe COVID-19 pandemic was a ‘fundamental surprise’ event in that it emerged as a crisis without warning, and without a preceding pattern. Like most organizations, hospitals were caught off-guard with few to no pre-existing protocols and guidelines in place, exacerbating challenges related to patient safety and care quality. It is important that such situations are met with proactive communication between the various organizational levels so as to develop policies that are closely aligned with adaptive patterns on the frontlines. To this end, the study involved a two-pronged approach: i) eliciting narratives of adaptation during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic from frontline radiology caregivers through self-reports, and ii) eliciting more detailed perspectives from frontline staff through in-person focus groups. The data from the self-reports and focus groups are analyzed and compared for qualitative insights on factors that enabled or impeded adaptive performance in radiology at a large pediatric hospital.
