119. Integrating Positive Train Control (PTC) with Grade Crossing Systems for Enhanced Rail Safety
SessionPoster Session 2
DescriptionThis study examines how PTC can improve rail safety at grade crossings despite not being designed to prevent improper vehicular movement. An extensive literature review outlines the operational characteristics and limitations of both PTC and grade-crossing warning systems, aiming to identify effective safety improvement strategies. Utilizing heuristic analysis, a hierarchy of safety measures is proposed, focusing on those with the most significant impact on accident prevention and areas needing improvement. A human factors analysis further investigates driver interactions with warning systems, seeking ways to bolster comprehension and reaction times to reduce accident likelihood. The study further explores integrating PTC with grade crossing and wayside equipment to forge a comprehensive safety system capable of mitigating train-train and train-vehicle collisions.
