Zachary Klinefelter
Biography
Dr. Zachary Klinefelter, Scientist, Aptima, Inc. works in the Training, Learning, and Readiness Division. His research focuses on understanding stress, fatigue, burnout, stigma, and individual and team well-being, especially in high-stress occupations such as the military, healthcare, and emergency services. He has contributed to multiple DOD-funded projects as principal investigator, project manager, and research team member in the realms of individual and team well-being, human-machine collaboration, among others. Dr. Klinefelter has expertise in psychometrics and advanced quantitative methods including multi-level modeling, supervised learning, and structural equation modeling. Prior to Aptima, Dr. Klinefelter held a post-doctoral research fellowship with a large academic healthcare institution. There, he was charged with developing a fatigue risk management system for emergency physicians and nurses. This work involved integrating wearable sensors with other objective and subjective measures of fatigue, as well as creating dashboards and other visuals to help organizational decisionmakers understand fatigue in their provider populations. Dr. Klinefelter has published papers in the areas of determinants of mental health treatment seeking in high-risk occupations, military psychology, organizational climate, and stress and fatigue at work. He also has co-authored two book chapters on different aspects of military psychology. He received his PhD in industrial-organizational psychology from Clemson University with a certificate in occupational health psychology, an MA in psychological sciences, and a BA in both psychology and Spanish from Northern Arizona University.
