Biography
Soyun is currently a master's student in Health Informatics at the University of Toronto's Dalla Lana School of Public Health and a Research Student at the Centre for Digital Therapeutics, Unity Health Network, Toronto. She holds two Bachelor's degrees from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and The Cyber University of Korea, with practical experience in user experience research.
Her research work is centered around the intersection of health equity, human factors, and digital health. Her ultimate goal is to improve the accessibility of care and serve citizens of the world regardless of background, ethnicity, or sociodemographic status. Digital health interventions have the potential to address existing health disparities by providing accessible and remote support. During her master’s program, she has been trained to design digital health products that are inclusive and accessible by embedding equity within the system, informed by human factors.
She actively participated in the “Interpreter Utilization Project” at St. Michael’s Hospital during the spring and summer of 2023. This project aimed to find barriers and facilitators to the use of medical interpreters and developed recommendations, ultimately to mitigate the language barriers in the healthcare context and to improve the quality of care and health outcomes for patients who prefer languages other than English.
Currently, Soyun is developing a mental health module to manage the comorbid mental health issues of heart failure patients and their caregivers. Both groups face an increased risk of developing mental health issues. To address these heart failure-related mental health challenges, Soyun will adapt SOLAR (an evidence-based digital mental health intervention) and introduce it as a mental health module within Medly (a comprehensive heart failure self-management system).
