Biography
Dr. Wiegmann is an Associate Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before joining the faculty at UW-Madison, Dr. Wiegmann was the Director of Human Factors and Patient Safety Research within the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Mayo Clinic. He also formerly served as an aviation psychologist and accident investigator for both the National Transportation Safety Board and the United States Navy. Dr. Wiegmann received his B.S. in psychology from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (1988) and his M.Sc. (1990) and Ph.D. (1992) in cognitive psychology from Texas Christian University. He also holds a postdoctoral master’s degree in biomedical science from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine (2007). Dr. Wiegmann has published extensively on the topics of human factors and system safety and has received multiple awards for his work in both aviation and healthcare. Dr. Wiegmann is a fellow of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and past president and fellow of the Aerospace Human Factors Association. He is also a fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA) and past-president and fellow of APA’s Division 21 - Applied Experimental and Engineering Psychology.
