Biography
Dr. Hongwei Hsiao is a tenured full professor and the Rogelio Benavides Memorial Chair for Industrial Engineering and Industrial Safety in the IEEN program. Dr. Hsiao received his Ph.D. in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1990. He has over 30 years of experience in Industrial Safety, Human Factors and Ergonomics, and Human-Robot Interaction. Dr. Hsiao directs the Smart Technology Advancement Research (STAR) initiative, which covers big data in industrial safety, protective gear sizing and design for diverse workforces, human-systems interfaces in emerging technologies, and first responder safety. Before joining the TAMU-CC IEEN program in 2022, Dr. Hsiao served as Chief of the Protective Technology Branch at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), where he formulated program strategic goals and oversaw programs in multiple engineering and informatics fields for public health and workplace safety, managing $100M in research ventures. Dr. Hsiao has delivered lectures, seminars, and workshops on emerging technology, human factors, and research methods both online and in person. He has hosted physical and virtual symposiums on human-systems interfaces and human-centered ecosystems and managed federal programs and scientists under both regular and pandemic conditions. Dr. Hsiao has served as an editorial board member for nine journals, authored over 190 papers, patents, and apps, along with a book and three journal special issues. He has delivered over 100 presentations on technology management and served on advisory boards for multiple university programs and dissertation committees. Dr. Hsiao teaches IEEN 3320 Human Factors, IEEN 3324 Human-Systems Interface, and IEEN 3330 Robotics and Automation.
