SUMMARY:109. The Use of Eye-Tracking Technology to Measure Cognitive-Behav
ioral Processes During IV Medication Administration
DESCRIPTION:Poster\n\nJeannine Blake (University of Massachusetts, Amherst
)\n\nThe use of intravenous smart pump (IVSP) technology for delivering me
dication to hospitalized patients has become widespread in the United Stat
es as a standard of care. Despite its prevalence, the complex process of d
elivering IV medication poses challenges, with numerous steps and potentia
l opportunities for frequent errors that pose serious risk to patient safe
ty. The integration of eye tracking technology presents a significant oppo
rtunity to enhance our understanding of IVSP user experience which has not
yet been explored. Using novice user participants, this pilot study aims
to develop a research method that combines eye tracking and established us
ability approaches for understanding current IVSP technology user experien
ce. Findings indicate one particular IVSP was not only preferred subjectiv
ely but is also faster and less error-prone. Through innovative research m
ethods involving end-users, we can enhance usability and revolutionize the
process of IV medication administration, subsequently mitigating the risk
to patient safety.\n\nTrack: Aerospace Systems, Cognitive Engineering & D
