SUMMARY:114. Simultaneous Remote Monitoring of Multiple Automated Vehicles
DESCRIPTION:Poster\n\nLane Shoffner and Jing Feng (North Carolina State Un
iversity)\n\nAs vehicle automation continues to become a more prevalent pa
rt of everyday life, remote\noperators may be able to contribute to making
this technology safer and more efficient. Such\noperators could be expect
ed to monitor vehicles until it is necessary for them to intervene. In\nre
cent years several countries have passed legislation mandating the impleme
ntation of\nremote operation, making it a plausible scenario. For many pra
ctical reasons, operators may\nmonitor more than one vehicle.\n\nThis stud
y provides an initial look into how remote operators might perform when as
ked to\nattend to multiple concurrent displays using simulated automated v
ehicles. The initial results\nindicate that participants retained a compar
able level of accuracy in detecting failures in\nautomation as the number
of vehicles they monitored rose from one to two, albeit with a\nhigher wor
kload. The results and the methodology provide insights into potential tas
k designs\nfor remote operators of automated vehicles.\n\nTrack: Aging, Au
