SUMMARY:95. Running as a Woman: The Potential Impact of Geo-Tracking Techn
ology on Perceptions of Safety in Trail Running
DESCRIPTION:Poster\n\nRosemary O'Neal (North Carolina State University)\n\
nNature has the ability to restore mental fatigue as it expands our visual
field instead of demanding attention to detail1. Evidence also states tha
t exercising outdoors has a clear benefit to mental health in comparison w
ith exercising indoors2. The amplification of green exercise, a term coine
d to describe exercising and focusing on health in nature2, is vital in to
day's culture. However, there is evidence stating that the benefits of gre
en exercise significantly decline for women because of the fear surroundin
g sexual assault and violence within these spaces3. A 2023 study done on t
he safety of trail and ultra-runners found that 70% of female respondents
reported incidents of sexual harassment and assault while trail running4.
\n	\nThe initial aim of this research is to measure how unsafe women feel
when running or walking on outdoor trails. The proposed research will inve
stigate how technology can promote women’s safety while trail running.\n\n
