SUMMARY:100. A Survey on Perceptions of Smartwatch Haptic Feedback for Enh
 ancing Automated Vehicle Takeover Decisions
DESCRIPTION:Poster\n\nWei-Hsiang Lo and Gaojian Huang (San Jose State Univ
ersity)\n\nThe imperfections in the driving automation system have challen
ged older adults because the takeover process is cognitively and physicall
y demanding. Due to the wrist being more vibration-sensitive, the haptic d
isplay on the smartwatch could be a good option to warn the driver. Howeve
r, the preference between dynamic patterns (vibrating sequences at differe
nt locations on the smartwatch) and static patterns (vibrating at certain
locations on the smartwatch) is unclear. Therefore, this study examined th
e effects of signal patterns in two different scenarios of criticality bet
ween younger (mean age = 32.75) and older adults (mean age = 69.77) using
a national survey. Three hundred forty respondents’ data were collected.
The results showed that static patterns received higher usefulness and sat
isfaction scores than dynamic patterns. However, no age differences were f
ound. These findings provide a potential guide for the next-generation tak
eover warning system on wrist-wearable devices in the automated system.\n\
