SUMMARY:Trust is Contagious: Social Influences in Human-Human-AI Team
DESCRIPTION:Lecture\n\nEmanuel Rojas and Mengyao Li (Georgia Institute of
Technology)\n\nTrust towards AI can be influenced by a second human teamma
te through trust contagion. Trust contagion is a person or a group conscio
usly or unconsciously influencing other individuals’ trust in AI through s
ocial interactions via verbal and nonverbal cues. Our objective is to inve
stigate the effects of trust contagion in human-human-AI teams. The study
is a 2 (AI reliability: high vs. low, within-subjects factor) x 3 (confede
rate trusting: high, low, neutral, between-subjects factor) mixed-subject
design. A team of three, consisting of one participant, one confederate, a
nd one AI teammate, performed a ten-round trust-based game that requires r
esource allocation and joint decision making with their human and AI teamm
ates. Results showed that people had higher trust in the AI teammate and p
erformed better in the game when teaming up with high-trusting confederate
. Our results suggested social influences from another human can affect tr
ust towards AI.\n\nTrack: Human AI Robot Teaming (AI)\n\nSession Chair: Ja
