SUMMARY:Consumer Education With and Without Responsibility Information for
  Two ADAS Over-the-Air Updates
DESCRIPTION:Lecture\n\nJohn Gaspar, Justin Mason, and Cher Carney (Univers
ity of Iowa) and John Lenneman (Toyota Collaborative Safety Research Cente
r)\n\nAccurate understanding of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS)
is important to the safe utilization of the technologies. Drivers have gap
s in their understanding of these systems, which are changing at an increa
singly fast rate due to the adoption of over-the-air updates. There is a n
eed to understand when additional consumer education (CE) is warranted and
what information that CE should contain. \n\nA framework can provide guid
ance related to the types of elements that should be included in CE. CE ma
y provide information on the purpose, procedure, function, limitations of
ADAS, and the driver’s responsibility. CE may contain some combination of
each type of information, and research is needed to understand which eleme
nts are necessary for a specific educational approach. Furthermore, resear
ch is needed to understand how the content of CE interacts with the type o
 f ADAS system being trained.\n\nTrack: Surface Transportation\n\nSession C

 (National Transportation Safety Board)
