SUMMARY:Utilizing Human-Centered Design To Improve Discovery, Analysis, An
d Collaboration In Population Migration Research
DESCRIPTION:Lecture\n\nWerner Born and Christina Blatsos (Aptima, Inc.)\n\
nThe population migration research community faces challenges analyzing di
verse data sources due to siloed efforts leading to a lack of collaboratio
 n. This creates two problems for researchers: (1) wasting invaluable time
and effort to recreate datasets on their own, and/or (2) approaching topic
s while lacking the context of relevant data they simply do not know exist
 s. This leads to redundant work, an incomplete picture, and difficulties t
racking connections, author contributions, and research evolution. Existin
g archival research tools have limited abilities to visualize geospatial t
rends with other data forms and identify specialized authors and sources.
To address these issues, we applied human-centered design to develop a so
ftware solution that aims to enhance migration research by reducing data p
rocessing barriers and enabling intelligent tagging for archiving and quer
ying. The expected outcome is an increase in collaboration through recomme
ndations of researchers, datasets, models, and insights to accelerate rese
arch progress while reducing duplicative efforts.\n\nTrack: Usability and
