SUMMARY:Supporting Driver Attention Towards Potential Hazards During Takeo
 ver: A Preliminary Result
DESCRIPTION:Industry/Practitioner Case Study, Lecture\n\nX.Jessie Yang and

Alicia Romo and William Horrey (AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety); Dawn T
ilbury and Lionel Robert (University of Michigan); Feng Zhou (University o
f Michigan, Dearborn); and Lisa Molnar (University of Michigan Transportat
ion Institute)\n\nThis study investigates the impact of a supportive syste
m on takeover transitions in conditional autonomous driving. The supportiv
e system is designed to direct drivers' attention toward potential hazards
in the environment when a takeover request occurs, excluding the event tr
iggering the takeover request. The study comprises two components: (1) ide
ntifying types of potential hazards using naturalistic driving data, and (
 2) conducting a driving simulator study to develop and assess a gaze guida
nce system based on a theoretical model of selective visual attention. The
results indicate that drivers using a highly salient attention guidance s
ystem were less likely to collide with a secondary hazard during takeover
transitions. This suggests that gaze guidance support is an effective appr
oach for assisting drivers during takeover transitions.\n\nTrack: Surface
