SUMMARY:Future of Team Research: On Teamness and Dimensions of Variability
  in Teams
DESCRIPTION:Discussion Panel\n\nMyke Cohen (Arizona State University; Apti
ma, Inc.); Nancy Cooke and Jamie Gorman (Arizona State University); Stephe
n Fiore (University of Central Florida); Wayne Gray and Sounak Banerjee (R
ensselaer Polytechnic Institute); Leanne Hirshfield (University of Colorad
o); and Daniel Nguyen (Aptima, Inc.)\n\nTeams are increasingly essential i
n modern work environments. According to the team science literature, team
s function through team cognition that emerges as people interdependently
work toward shared goals. However, predominant definitions in teaming rese
arch have been challenged by novel concepts in recent empirical team studi
es, including non-human teammates and interactive team cognition. Addition
ally, the variability in team characteristics and contexts complicates the
generalizability of empirical findings. To address these issues, Cooke an
d colleagues (2023) introduced "teamness", a multidimensional construct fo
r characterizing the extent of team cognition arising from team interactio
ns. In this panel discussion, cognitive scientists representing a wide ran
ge of expertise will provide perspectives on the broad state of team scien
ce frameworks and methods, the generalizability of team research findings
across applied team research domains, and the utility of teamness and simi
lar context-sensitive multidimensional paradigms for their research applic
ations.\n\nTrack: Human AI Robot Teaming (AI)\n\nSession Chair: Myke Cohen
